About Us

Who Are We?

The area around St John’s Church serves the resort by providing accommodation in the form of small hotels and guest houses; our congregation is swelled each year when we're joined by holidaymakers. A number of larger Victorian properties have been converted into residential or nursing homes for the elderly, some of which receive monthly visits for services and Communion. Weymouth and District Hospital is literally just around the corner from the church on Melcombe Avenue, and behind the hospital on Cranford Avenue is Weymouth College, offering Sixth Form, Further and Adult Education.

The picturesque Esplanade hides the Park District, a densely populated area with issues of social deprivation. Many of the houses closest to the station were originally built for railway workers in the second half of the nineteenth century, but have now been converted into flats or bedsits; some of the occupants are seasonally employed or on state benefits, and a proportion are single parent families.

Weymouth and Portland Borough Council have drawn up a regeneration scheme for the area along with that for the town centre. In the Park District the Waterside Community Forum has been set up and, since November 2006, has used the Park Church as a Community Centre.

There are, not unnaturally, church members who have moved out of the area served by our churches but who nevertheless still attend so that they can maintain contact with their friends. There are also those who travel further for other reasons - who knows, perhaps because they like what we do?

The Radipole Parish Team Ethos

This Team is Evangelical in a positive, joyful and full sense of the word.

  • We want to be centred on the person of the Lord Jesus; to live out the fullness of life that is ours in Jesus through the power of His Spirit so that all we are and do might bring glory to him.
  • We want to be rooted in the Scriptures as the best way to get to know God and help others to do so. Therefore the exposition of the Bible is at the centre of our teaching. All variety in understanding and spirituality in ourselves and these churches must be tested against Scripture.
  • We want to reach out with the good news of Jesus to the parish and the town, so that more and more come to know the living Lord Jesus. To this end we aim to be involved in the community, sharing the love of the Lord Jesus in word and deed.
  • As a staff team we work as fellow Christians, supporting each other; working together to share our resources and talents (depending on particular areas of expertise).
  • As a team we respect the different styles/ approaches of the districts we have been asked to serve and in this we seek to be open to each other rather than militant in our approach.
  • In current practical terms we are committed to a pattern of meeting together every week for a Team Staff Meeting and for prayer at 8.30am on a Wednesday. The pattern is always open for review but the underlying commitment is essential.
  • Ian Hobbs (Team Rector), Tim Greenslade (Team Vicar), Gordon Driver (NSM), Pip Salmon (Team Vicar)
