Prayer

“Prayer is just about the most naturally unnatural thing it is possible to do”. This is not my attempt to start a riddle page in Jottings, but the first sentence in a book on prayer called Prayer and the Voice of God. The authors explain themselves—Prayer is natural because anyone can do it and most of us will pray at some stage of our lives. However prayer can be unnatural because when we pray we ask God to intervene in a special way, for example when we pray for healing. Prayer is also unnatural because it does not always come easily to us. We find it difficult to find time to pray and often our minds wander when we do pray.

So how can we learn to pray in a natural everyday way to the God who is “supernatural”? There are all sorts of methods that can help, but I wonder if the best way is to take a cue from that word “natural”. We want natural communication with family and friends so that the relationship can grow. Likewise, God wants to have a relationship with us. So we need to learn to be natural with God, so that we can talk to him.

But of course there also is another aspect to prayer...we are praying to Almighty God, maker of heaven and earth. When we realise the greatness of God, then we know he has the power to act in answer to God—centred prayers. When we see prayer in terms of a relationship and a channel through which God works in the world, then often the difficulty of getting down to prayer is eased. We will want to pray because we see how important it is for us and for the situations we pray for. Let’s encourage each other to keep praying!

Before the recent Witness service, a cheque for £1581 was presented to Mike Stear after Henry’s legs carried him to Portland and back on a sponsored run. Since then the total has risen to £1730 with gift – aid to be added. The money will be used to complete the building programme at the orphanage in Repalle, India. Mike will be visiting the orphanage whilst he is in India over Easter.

Be thankful
Written by Mike Miles

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire.

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something,

For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations,

Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge,

Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes

They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary,

Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It’s easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfilment comes to those who

are also thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.

Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,

And they can become your blessings.

Thank you Jane Downer for sharing this with us
