| To St John's Church |
|
The spire of St John's Church is such a prominent landmark from both land and sea that finding the building is seldom, for the sighted at least, a problem. By Road From Dorchester follow the A354, passing the Shell service station on your left, to the Manor Roundabout. Leave the A354 by continuing straight ahead south-eastwards along Dorchester Road - St John's Church stands on a large triangular roundabout at the end of the road. Arriving in Weymouth from Bridport via the A3157 coast road, follow signs for Dorchester to the Manor Roundabout. Turn right (3rd exit) and follow the Dorchester Road south-eastwards to the end. From the east on the A353, pass two sets of pelican lights at the end of the Preston Beach Road then see St John's spire straight ahead as you rise up over Greenhill.
Because St John's is situated on what has become a busy traffic island, crossing the road to the church can be hazardous. It is recommended that you use the zebra crossings available from the Dorchester Road end, near Carlton Road South on the west side or near Melcombe Avenue on the east side. There is then a crossing towards Wester's Restaurant, allowing you to walk towards the Esplanade alongside the former rectory grounds and round to the church entrance.
